THE LIFE CARE PLAN
In establishing Doolittle Home, Sarah Doolittle
did not define "adequate care" when expressing her
desire to provide care for the elderly. In absence
of a definition, the Trustees of Doolittle Home
opted for total care which, by extension, provides
peace of mind to the families of residents as well
as the best possible care for the residents
themselves.
Once an applicant qualifies both physically and
financially and is accepted as a resident, the
Doolittle Home assumes total responsibility for that
individual. Once voted in as Life Care residents,
they are entitled to all amenities and services of
the home for the remainder of their lives. This
unique all-inclusive program offers the resident and
their family a sense of security knowing that the
home is committed to meeting all of their needs even
if the residents should experience a change in
health status during their stay.
Currently, Doolittle Home is the only retirement
community licensed by the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts as a Life Care facility.
To be admitted to Doolittle Home, residents must
pass a physical examination and complete an
application. They must also be ambulatory, able to
perform basic life functions for themselves, and
able to live in the main house.
Admission fees are based on several factors: age
of the resident, life expectancy based on actuarial
calculations, social security and pension income and
health insurance coverage. Based on the age of the
resident, a calculation is made of life expectancy.
The cost of service is then calculated for the
estimated months of the resident's life. From that
total, we deduct their monthly social security and
pension income and adjust based on whether or not
the resident has health insurance. The new total is
then reduced to its present value to determine the
life care fee. Essentially the life care fee is the
present value of the estimated cost of caring for
the resident for life, net of social security and
pension income.
This fee, payable on admission to the Home, then
assures the resident care for life. Should the
resident pass away before their life care account is
exhausted, their heirs will receive a refund of 90%
of the remaining unallocated dollars net of a
$10,000 fee. If the resident exceeds the calculated
life expectancy, there is no additional fee. Also,
if the resident moves to the nursing unit, there is
no additional fee even though the cost of providing
the services increases.
Life care is peace of mind for both the resident
and their family. Whatever needs arise over the life
of the resident, they are addressed at Doolittle
Home. Our staff highly value the dignity of each
resident until their last breath is taken.
At Doolittle Home, we also make decisions of the
heart instead of only decisions of the head. While
we strive to efficiently run the business of
Doolittle Home, decisions are made from the context
of what is best for the residents. An example: After
a hospitalization, many resident's require
rehabilitation. If the residents are sent to an
approved rehabilitation facility, Medicare covers
the cost. However, if we return the resident to
Doolittle Home to do the rehabilitation ourselves,
we must assume that cost. Whenever medically
feasible, we opt to bring the resident back to
Doolittle Home because we firmly believe our
residents recover more quickly in familiar
surroundings with familiar staff. Our heart dictates
that we strive to do what is best for the residents
regardless of the cost implications.
Even though a resident's health status may change
dramatically over the course of their lifetime,
Doolittle Home provides care for the life of the
individual resident. Families have the security of
knowing that their loved ones are being well cared
for at Doolittle Home.
